Books & audiobooks you can read free — and legally
Millions of e-books and audiobooks are free and completely legal — the classics outright, and even brand-new bestsellers through your library.
Free classics, beautifully
- Standard Ebooks — public-domain books carefully reformatted and typeset; the nicest free editions on the web.
- Project Gutenberg — 70,000+ free titles, the original and the biggest.
- The Internet Archive & Open Library — an enormous scanned collection you can read and borrow.
- LibriVox — thousands of free public-domain audiobooks, read by volunteers.
New releases, still free
- Your public library, via Libby/OverDrive — borrow current e-books and audiobooks free with a library card. This is the best-kept secret for recent bestsellers, and it's completely legitimate.
- Hoopla — many libraries add this too, often with no waitlists.
For new titles, a library app is the real "unlimited" — no card-gated "membership" required.
